Urban Style Kitchen Remodel: Meeting Homeowner Needs
The owners of this 1915 Birmingham home had expanded their space with a two-story addition, including a kitchen, family room, and primary suite, a decade earlier. However, they were never satisfied with the first-floor layout, particularly the kitchen’s design and functionality. They envisioned a spacious island for gathering, with a central cooking area seamlessly connected to the family room. The main challenge was the poorly positioned powder room, which not only limited the size and placement of the island but also awkwardly opened directly into the family room, creating a less-than-ideal flow and privacy concern.

Innovative Kitchen Remodeling Solution in Birmingham, MI
We created an open kitchen design by relocating the powder room near the foyer. Centered around a gourmet Wolf cooking area, the kitchen was designed with a spacious 3’8½” x 7’5½” island. This change also allowed for a larger powder room with a window and an extended foyer, creating a more grand and inviting entrance. The homeowners’ favorite addition was the stunning walk-in pantry, featuring an opaque glass door, a beverage center, and quartz countertops.
The updated professional design strikes a balance between contemporary sleekness and timeless tradition, incorporating paneled doors, crystal chandeliers, and a modern glass subway tile backsplash. In the breakfast nook, a built-in bench seat pairs with a harvest table that expands to seat up to 10 guests, making it ideal for entertaining.
The construction was completed with elegant finishing touches, including a custom living room fireplace with a beautiful marble mosaic tile surround and hearth, as well as extra-wide hand-scraped oak plank flooring throughout the first floor, adding warmth and sophistication to the home.
