Homeowner Need

Set on two private acres, this home already had a strong architectural personality, and the homeowners’ goal was to refresh the kitchen without losing the character that made the house so special. The original bamboo cabinetry was rare and distinctive, offering warmth and individuality they didn’t want to erase. Instead of moving toward a sleek or minimal aesthetic, they embraced a more eclectic direction—layering materials, texture, and detail to create depth and visual interest.

Preserving the home’s artistic elements, from decorative finishes to detailed glass, was an important part of the process. Every decision was guided by the desire to ensure the new kitchen felt like a natural evolution of the home, honoring its history while bringing new life, function, and craftsmanship to the space.

Remodeling Solution

The design approach focused on updating the kitchen while honoring the home’s original character. Rather than introducing a completely different aesthetic, the goal was to reinterpret the existing warmth, texture, and craftsmanship in a fresh way. A key decision was selecting cabinetry that could reflect the richness of the original bamboo. This led to a custom walnut finish that felt authentic to the home yet elevated in its execution. Eclectic materials were thoughtfully layered to create interest and personality, but carefully balanced so the space felt curated, cohesive, and enduring.

The updated design includes slate flooring, Plato Cabinetry in a custom walnut finish, and 3 cm soapstone countertops that add depth and natural character. High-performance Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances—including a Sub-Zero refrigerator and beverage center, along with a Wolf speed oven and hood—bring modern functionality to this artfully composed space.

Challenge

One of the biggest challenges was replacing the rare bamboo cabinetry with something that felt just as distinctive. A standard finish would have felt out of place, so finding the right color, grain, and depth required thoughtful sourcing and customization. Another key consideration was preserving the home’s layered, artistic feel while improving how the kitchen functioned. Each new element had to feel intentional and connected to the home’s existing design language, so the space would read as a natural evolution, not a typical kitchen update.

Result

The result is a kitchen that feels both refreshed and authentic, blending craftsmanship, personality, and modern performance into a space that truly belongs to the home.

The completed kitchen feels like a seamless continuation of the home’s original character—warmer, more functional, and thoughtfully elevated without losing its artistic soul. The custom walnut cabinetry brings depth and richness that echoes the spirit of the original bamboo, while slate floors and soapstone countertops add texture and timeless grounding. Layered materials, refined details, and high-performance appliances work together to support how the homeowners live today, all while preserving the eclectic, curated feel they love.
