After raising three children, this Grosse Pointe Farms couple was ready to renovate their estate home. The kitchen had been previously divided by a cumbersome archway, separating the main kitchen area from the nook and leaving little space for the island. When these Grosse Pointe Farms homeowners reached out to MainStreet, they had visions of opening up their space, making it lighter and brighter, increasing the island size, and creating enough elbow room for multiple cooks to share the kitchen space comfortably.

 

Our design goals included improving functionality, rethinking the cumbersome walkways and appliance placement, and brightening up the space with a classic, modern aesthetic. It was important to match the architectural integrity of this traditional-style home—with its large rooms, heavy wainscots, and original crystal laden chandeliers.

Construction Challenge / Solution

The home’s construction was built with 8” block and 4” exterior brick veneer, which presented an immediate challenge. The exterior walls were over 12” thick and the framing construction was all steel. Consequently, it was going to be difficult to open up and remove the archway between the nook, as well as recess the refrigerator, ovens and pantry.  To support the new load on the support beam, we had to relocate a steel support post in the basement.  This required an engineered recalculation of the two new load bearing points.  The positive outcome was that the steel beam above the refrigerator wall did not have to be replaced and we were able to recess all units, creating a much more open and fluid space.

Design Challenge / Solution

Tired of cooking in a dark, closed off space, the homeowners were inspired to redesign and brighten up their space by choosing custom white cabinetry, white marble, and a white range hood.

 

After opening up the space and redirecting the functional workflow, importance was placed on creating a focal point, which became the range wall with Ann Saks hand cut marble tile, a narrow mantle custom flared hood, open shelving, and soft brass accents. Oversized stainless steel appliances and a beautiful soft blue island complete the look, resulting in a finished space that feels bright and cheery.

Favorite Appliance

Now this family has a perfectly remodeled kitchen that welcomes large family gatherings and fosters home-cooked meals. The 6 burners on the 48” range top is used daily and the griddle is their favorite part.  Originally, the client was interested in the Wolf M series double ovens; however, once she went to the local Subzero Wolf distributor showroom and had the opportunity to see and use the steam oven, she knew she would use it every day.  It is now her favorite appliance.  Also, fans of combining stainless steel with the white cabinetry and marble, our clients chose the SS finish on the BI refrigerator.  The Cove dishwasher simply met their need for superior quality.
