Homeowner Need

This close-knit family of six holds deep ties to their religious community and frequently hosts large gatherings in their home, necessitating expansive indoor and outdoor entertainment areas. Situated on a spacious one-acre lot, their relatively new Bloomfield Hills residence offered ample room for expansion, both at the rear and on the south side.

The clients’ vision included the creation of a luxurious first-floor Primary Suite with an adjoining library/office, a complete transformation of the kitchen into an open and inviting space, the expansion of the family room and dining area, and the addition of captivating outdoor living spaces.

Notably, their 2007 French country home boasted intricate glazed brick designs, meticulously handcrafted corbels, and gracefully curving rooflines, each detail contributing to its distinct charm. Our paramount objective was to seamlessly integrate every new addition into the existing design, preserving the home’s unique character throughout.

New Entrance and Bedroom Suite

Pocket door

To enhance the flow of entertainment and family life which centered at the rear of the home, we reimagined the original formal living room as the entrance to the new library, creating a refined and formal gateway to the primary suite addition. The entryways into the living room were artfully reconfigured to establish an intimate library ambiance, complete with custom bookshelves that cater to both the private office and living area.

The newly added bedroom suite features a spacious sleeping area designed with a tray ceiling and a stunning Visual Comfort chandelier. This area seamlessly connects to an expansive walk-in closet and a spa-like bathroom, culminating in a private haven for the couple. During construction, a decision was made to retain some of the brick details within the closet, adding an intimate touch with ample space for his and hers storage, open shelving, and a dressing bench.

The new bathroom boasts an expansive open wet room with dual shower heads and a built-in spa tub, providing a serene space for relaxation bathed in natural light from multiple sources. A private toilet room, generous storage options, and a custom 2-person vanity area complete this tranquil retreat.

A Relocated, Expansive Kitchen with New Walk-in Pantry

When the primary suite took over the original living room, a natural progression was to enhance the visual connection between the main portion of the first floor and the enchanting rear yard view. This led to the relocation of the kitchen into a brand-new addition, seamlessly opening it to an expanded dining room and a generously sized family room, perfectly suited for their large gatherings.

The new kitchen showcases exquisite custom cabinetry from Plain and Fancy, featuring a soft white painted perimeter and a cherry island that comfortably seats six. With dual sinks—one nestled beneath a window and the other discreetly placed in the island, just behind the 48” Wolf range—this kitchen facilitates multiple chefs and efficient cleanup, made even easier with the inclusion of two dishwashers, ideal for hosting large parties. A third steam oven quickly became a culinary essential for everyday family meals. A stone’s throw away, the Subzero refrigerator and freezer towers stand ready to accommodate the needs of a sizable crowd.

Complementing the kitchen island, a custom cherry bar complete with refrigeration, an ice maker, and a petite bar sink becomes the go-to spot for crafting cocktails. Given the open kitchen layout, the new walk-in pantry offers extensive storage, space for small tasks, and even a convenient coffee bar—a delightful spot for preparing school lunches. To maintain a harmonious aesthetic, the entire pantry can be discreetly closed off with custom barn doors that beautifully complement the kitchen cabinetry.

Expanding beyond the kitchen, the newly designed dining and family rooms seamlessly blend with the great outdoors, facilitated by extra-wide Pella door wall systems in each room. From the new family room, you can step directly into a stunning covered porch, complete with a soaring pine ceiling, custom lighting, heaters, and a majestic stone fireplace. This outdoor oasis features automated retractable screens and vinyl panels, ensuring comfortable year-round enjoyment.

Adjacent to this backyard living space lies an open patio designed for outdoor dining, complemented by a three-sided stone and concrete bar, perfect for grilling and entertaining. To shield against inclement weather while grilling, the entire area is sheltered by an automated pergola that opens and closes effortlessly with the touch of a button. This outdoor living haven truly extends the beauty of this home into the natural surroundings.
