This 1916 Pleasant Ridge Dutch Colonial offers three spacious floors of living for a family of four. Several years ago, we transformed the entire third floor into a luxurious home office, and now it was time to elevate the modest kitchen into a space worthy of this magnificent historic residence.
Remodeling Solution
To achieve the needed extra space, we extended into the generous rear yard, crafting a spacious kitchen featuring a central 7-foot-wide island, large enough to accommodate the entire family, and a convenient walk-in pantry for added storage.
The new kitchen seamlessly integrates with the home’s historical charm, boasting oversized moldings reminiscent of early 20th-century Detroit residences. Tall wainscoting was introduced to harmonize beautifully with the adjacent dining room. Custom-painted cabinetry, designed in a flat-paneled inset door style, envelops the substantial cherry wood island, all adorned with exquisite Tempest Blue quartzite countertops. A 48-inch Wolf range beckons for delightful family cooking adventures, crowned by a striking white enameled hood accented with gold strapping that harmonizes flawlessly with the generous brushed gold pulls and matching Newport Brass satin faucets.
In a strategic touch, the 30-inch fully paneled Subzero refrigerator and freezer columns find their place in a cozy niche, seamlessly blending with the wainscot surround, providing easy access while staying clear of the main walkway.
One of the kitchen’s crowning achievements is undoubtedly the coffered ceiling, meticulously finished with detailed crown molding to match the cabinetry and trim, adding an extra layer of elegance to this newly constructed culinary haven.
